5 Steps for Artificial Grass Installation

Installing artificial grass in your lawn involves a few straightforward steps. After consulting with a contractor and selecting the color and style of your new turf, the next task is to prepare the ground. Here are the five essential steps to ensure a smooth installation:

1. Remove Sod

The first step in the installation process is to remove the existing sod. This involves more than just cutting the grass down to ground level. Professionals will dig into the ground to remove sections of sod, including the grass and its root system. This removed grass can often be recycled elsewhere, ensuring nothing goes to waste.

2. Excavate

Once the old grass is removed, the excavation process continues to ensure the ground is level and firm. This might involve digging deeper to reach a solid layer of earth. During this step, any obstacles that could hinder the installation are also removed. The result is a flat, tightly packed surface ready for the next phase.

3. Create the Framework

A proper framework is essential for a successful artificial grass installation. There are two main methods to create this framework:

  • Perimeter Outline: Dig a small trench around the lawn’s perimeter and insert thin planks of treated wood. These are secured with ground stakes, ensuring the edges of the lawn are level with the rest of the surface.

  • Raised Edge: For a slightly elevated perimeter, secure the planks directly on the ground without digging a trench. Ground stakes will still be used to keep the planks in place.

4. Fill in With Aggregate

With the framework in place, the next step is to fill the space with aggregate. This mixture might include different elements such as sand, pulverized granite dust, and limestone. The specific type and grade of aggregate used will depend on the underlying soil and the size of the yard. This layer helps create a stable base for the artificial grass.

5. Install Artificial Grass

Finally, it's time to lay down the artificial grass. The turf typically comes in rolls. One end of the roll is secured to the framework, making it easier to roll out and stretch the turf into position. This process is similar to carpet installation, ensuring the turf is taut and smooth. The seams between the rolls are sealed to create a seamless, natural-looking lawn.

By following these five steps—removing sod, excavating, creating a framework, filling in with aggregate, and installing the artificial grass—you can achieve a beautiful, low-maintenance lawn that stays lush and green year-round.
