5 Things You Need to Know About Installing Artificial Grass

You've decided that artificial grass is the way to go for your lawn, but what comes next? If you're ready to replace your natural, patchy lawn with lush, evergreen artificial grass, there are a few key steps to understand about the installation process. If you’re working with a professional installer, they’ll handle these tasks for you. However, if you’re tackling the project yourself, here's a closer look at what’s involved.

Installing Artificial Grass

For those planning a DIY artificial grass installation, our comprehensive guide will be invaluable. Here’s a quick overview of the essential steps:

1. Remove Your Old Sod

Before the new artificial grass can be laid, the old grass must be completely removed. Simply trimming it close to the ground won’t suffice. A professional will need to dig into the ground and remove sections of sod, ensuring that both the grass and its root system are eliminated. Consider recycling the old grass elsewhere, so nothing goes to waste.

2. Excavate the Area

Once the old grass is removed, the next step is to ensure the area is level and firm. This might require additional digging to reach a stable layer of earth. This step also includes removing any debris or obstacles that could interfere with the installation. The result should be a flat, tightly packed expanse of soil, ready for the next phase.

3. Create a Framework

A proper artificial grass installation requires a sturdy framework. This can be achieved by digging a small trench around the perimeter of your lawn and fitting in treated wooden planks, secured with ground stakes. This will ensure that the edges of the lawn are level with the rest of the surface. Alternatively, for a slightly raised perimeter, the planks can be laid directly on the ground and secured with stakes.

4. Fill With Aggregate

With the framework in place, the next step is to fill the area with aggregate. This material can include sand, granite dust, limestone, or a combination of these. The choice of aggregate depends on the underlying soil and the size of your yard. The aggregate layer provides a stable base for the artificial grass, ensuring good drainage and longevity.

5. Roll Out the Turf

After the aggregate is smoothed out, it’s time to roll out the turf. The artificial grass usually comes in large rolls. One end is secured to the frame, and the turf is stretched out across the area, similar to laying carpet. The seams between the rolls are carefully sealed to create a seamless, natural-looking lawn.

While this process might seem time-consuming, professionals can typically complete an average-sized yard in a single day. What starts as a bare patch in the morning can be transformed into a lush, green lawn by nightfall. Proper preparation ensures a faster installation and a beautiful, long-lasting artificial grass lawn.
