As more people choose artificial grass for their gardens, we at The Garden Shop want to provide you with essential tips and advice to ensure your installation is flawless. If you're tired of mowing lawns and pulling weeds, and prefer to relax in your garden rather than maintain it, it's time to consider artificial grass. Here’s how to get the best results:
1. Choosing the Right Pile Height and Texture
The first step in creating a beautiful artificial lawn is selecting the right pile height and texture. For optimal comfort and appearance, we recommend a pile height of 20mm. This height provides a soft, cushioned feel underfoot, yet is short enough for you to sunbathe, picnic, and relax comfortably on your lawn.
2. Preparing the Base
A solid foundation is crucial for a durable and level artificial lawn. Start by preparing the base with 804 crushed stone, ensuring it’s approximately 3 inches deep. The base should be level and thoroughly compacted to provide a stable surface for your synthetic grass.
3. Weed Prevention
To minimize garden maintenance and prevent weeds from emerging, lay a weed block membrane before positioning the artificial grass. Choose a weed block with a weight of 50 to 200 grams per square meter for the best results. This layer will help ensure that your lawn remains weed-free for years to come.
4. Securing the Grass
When joining two lengths of artificial grass, use self-adhesive tape to secure them. This tape prevents the grass from shifting, lifting, or tearing, ensuring a seamless and durable lawn. Be cautious when applying the tape, as it’s very sticky and allows only one attempt for perfect placement.
For areas with heavy foot traffic or where kids frequently play, consider using ground pegs or fixing pins to anchor the grass. We recommend 20cm pins driven in with a rubber mallet for extra security and stability.
5. Edging Your Lawn
Edging your artificial lawn adds the finishing touch. Here are a few edging options:
- Bark or Rubber Chippings: A simple, low-cost solution that provides a quick and easy finish.
- Rubber Edging: Made from recycled car tires, this option is affordable and eco-friendly.
- Timber Edging: Ideal for straight edges, offering a clean and traditional look.
By following these tips, you’ll achieve a stunning, low-maintenance artificial lawn that enhances your outdoor space for years to come.
