Maintaining and Protecting Your Artificial Grass

Artificial turf is prized for its durability and low maintenance, but while it’s tough, it isn’t indestructible. To keep your lawn looking as stunning as the day it was installed, a little care goes a long way. Follow these guidelines to avoid potential damage and ensure your artificial grass remains in top condition for years to come.

1. Avoid Using Harsh Chemicals

Artificial grass is highly resilient, withstanding spills, dirt, and most common mishaps. However, certain chemicals can damage its nylon, polyurethane, or polypropylene materials, causing discoloration or degradation.

  • What to Avoid: Oil-based paints, gasoline, turpentine, and harsh chemical cleaners can permanently stain or weaken the turf. Exposure to these substances may void your product warranty.
  • Prevention Tips:
    • Keep such products far from your turf when working on projects.
    • Use water-based paints or cleaners when necessary.
    • For simple cleanups like paint spills, mild soap and water are usually sufficient.

2. Keep Turf Away from Open Flames and High Heat

The materials used in artificial grass are not flammable but can melt under intense heat. Protect your lawn by following these tips:

  • Firepits and Barbecues:
    • Construct a hardscape buffer (e.g., concrete, brick, or stone) around firepits or permanent grills.
    • For portable grills, always set them on a non-turf surface, such as a patio.
    • This prevents hot grease, food, or embers from causing unsightly damage.
  • Hot Objects: Avoid placing hot tools, equipment, or other high-temperature items directly on the turf.

3. Avoid Puncturing Your Artificial Grass

Artificial grass is designed to withstand a lot, but sharp objects can compromise its integrity by puncturing the backing mesh.

  • Temporary Fixtures: Decorations, holiday setups, or sports equipment like volleyball nets should use weighted bases instead of stakes to avoid piercing the turf.
  • Permanent Installations: If you need to install structures requiring posts (e.g., fences, swing sets, or light posts) after the turf is laid, consult professionals. AGS experts can guide you in making modifications without damaging the turf.
  • Debris Risks: After storms, inspect your lawn for sharp branches or debris that may have fallen and remove them promptly to avoid tearing.

4. Know Your Warranty

Top-quality artificial turf often comes with extensive warranties, but there may be conditions that limit coverage. For example, damage caused by exposure to harsh chemicals, high heat, or punctures might not be covered. Review your warranty and understand what is and isn’t included.

5. What If Accidents Happen?

Despite your best efforts, accidents are inevitable. If you notice damage, reach out to a professional repair service immediately. Addressing problems early can prevent them from worsening and extend the life of your turf.

Artificial grass is a durable and long-lasting investment, but like any valuable asset, it benefits from thoughtful care. By avoiding harsh chemicals, protecting it from high heat, and preventing punctures, you’ll keep your lawn looking vibrant and functional for years to come. With proper maintenance, your artificial grass will continue to enhance your property while saving you time and effort.
